These New Year's activities for kids are a great way to help students make resolutions and think about their goals for the new year. These activities are quick and easy - a perfect addition to the other lessons and crafts you have planned for your Kindergarten or First grade students!
Another New Year is here - bringing along more fresh starts and more opportunities to make New Year's resolutions!

If you're like me, you find yourself making resolutions every year to become more prepared, organized, and ahead in your lesson planning. This year, I'm helping my kiddos think about goals and resolutions they want to make for the new year.

We're going to do that with this simple and easy to make New Years Flip Book.
Students start out choosing a boy or girl character they'd like to represent them. There are 10 to pick from...5 boys and 5 girls.
Each character has a place for your student to write their name so that they can proudly own their goals and resolutions!
The first resolution page encourages students to consider what they will eat in the new year. This is a great time to have discussions on healthy eating. My daughter made the sample below and decided she wants to eat more healthy grapes this year!
The next resolution page has students considering what books they would like to read. They might have a specific book they want to read...or maybe they have a certain number of books they'd like to read!
Next, what are your kiddos going to play this year? Maybe they are going to try to play something new, like a new sport or activity. Or maybe they want to try to play with something they haven't played with in a long time.
The next resolution page is my favorite! Who will your student help this year and how will they help that person?
Where will your kiddos visit this year? Somewhere they've never been? Or maybe a favorite location? It might be a museum, a park, or even grandma's house!
Finally, have your students make a short and quick reference list of 5 goals they have for the new year!

Another way to incorporate New Year's Resolutions is with an emergent reader that ties in both reading and writing practice!

The emergent reader is 6 pages long. It includes simple sentences that were made with Kindergarten and First grade in mind.

I tried to include as many high frequency words as I could into each page.

Practice counting to ten on the fourth page! And check out what midnight looks like on a clock on page five!

The last page is my favorite... It sneaks some writing practice into the reading activity! Students write three short and simple resolutions.

This emergent reader is included with many other New Year's activities in a pack.

I love that some of my kiddos are wanting to make reading more as one of their resolutions. I found these fun New Year's bookmarks from Let's Learn S'more that are FREE on Pinterest:
This noise maker is always a big hit too...even older kids LOVE making noise!
One last idea...
This New Year's fireworks paint activity is always a simple but fun one!

Celebrate the 12 Days of Christmas with a flip book and emergent reader for your Preschool, Kindergarten, or First grade kids! The duo pack is a perfect addition to the other activities, crafts, and lessons you have planned this holiday for your students.
Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat...! This nursery rhyme and Christmas song is already being sung by the kids in my house. Christmas seems to be hitting us earlier this year. We've had record breaking temperatures and snow as early as Halloween. It seems to be inspiring people to put up trees and decorations a little earlier than normal.

As you begin to compile activities for your Christmas lesson plans, there are two brand new 12 Days of Christmas activities in The Barefoot Teacher shop this season that you won't want to miss out on.

This '12 Days of Christmas' flip book gives kids a chance to practice writing (and cutting & gluing) skills while practicing counting to 12.

There are 12 pages, plus a cover included. There is one page for every verse of the song.
Here is a close up of just the cover that the kids will color and cut out:

Each page has a 'glue' tab at the top to show students exactly where to glue. Glue sticks are best for this. That way, if they make a mistake, it can easily be fixed!

Here's a peek at the last 12 pages of the book:

When they are done, they can cut them out and glue them together at the top (don't forget, the tabs show where to glue on each page). And the complete project looks like this:
It's great for helping the kids remember the order of the song. Even I often forget which number has maids milking or pipers piping, lol!

The second activity goes right along with the flip book. It's a 14 pages emergent reader that comes in two versions, which I'll explain below. This book will fit right into your kids book boxes and is great for keeping at school for reading practice.
This reader is printed two to a page so that you can use the copy machine's double staple function when making your copies, and then use a slicer to slice the books apart.
The first page students will read is set up to introduce all the objects given during that 12 days of Christmas.
Students can highlight number words and practice counting on each page!
I included two versions of this book. You can use:
'seven geese laying' OR 'seven geese a-laying' for your little readers.

This quick print Thanksgiving 'I Am Thankful' flip book is a perfect addition to the other activities, crafts, and ideas you have planned for your Preschool, Kindergarten, or First grade kids. Plus, get some yummy game ideas to do the week of Thanksgiving!
Thanksgiving is my absolute favorite holiday to celebrate! While we should always be grateful every single day of the year, I love that this time is specifically set aside to celebrate our blessings.

Sometimes, it's easy to get wrapped up in the busyness that comes with the holiday...cleaning the house, shopping, preparing the food, traveling, and so on. In the midst of all there is to do, it's important that we take some time to also help our kids make their own moments for reflecting on their blessings as well!

Here are some fun, and even yummy, ideas to help you do that!

This 'I Am Thankful' flip book gives kids a chance to practice writing (and cutting & gluing) skills while thinking about what they are most thankful for in life.

There are nine covers for the book to choose from. If you're going to use this with your students, the books make a wonderful hallway display outside your classroom that they can take home for Thanksgiving break.

Besides the cover, there are six additional pages to the book. Each one has kids focusing on a specific area to be grateful in. From family, to food, to friends, and more!

One page throws a little word making fun into the book and asks students to think of all the smaller words they can make from the letters used in the bigger word 'thankful.'

The 'My Family' page asks kids to draw and label members of their family.
When they are done, they can cut them out and glue them together at the top (don't worry, the tabs show where to glue on each page).
You can get the I Am Thankful Flip Book HERE!
Here are some other cute ideas to get your kids thinking about what they're thankful for:
This first idea would make an adorable bulletin board display. Imagine...a turkey with hundreds of feathers filling up the board!
This next one is a Grateful Game...and it looks yummy and can be used with Skittles or M&Ms. This is a great one to do in small groups throughout the classroom!

This one is my favorite...though meant to keep kids busy while you're cooking Thanksgiving dinner, I think it actually makes an excellent math adding center during the week of Thanksgiving! An attention grabber for reluctant adders for sure!

Count & color leaves with a fun emergent reader that will enhance the other fall lessons, activities, and crafts you have planned for your kids. A great way to tie in math and color words practice. Plus, get a FREE download!
Fall came and went quickly for us. We actually had a lot of snow on Halloween this year! Bleh! Before the leaves get crunchy and crumbled, I wanted to show you an awesome fall counting reinforcement that I snuck into an emergent reader, a few other fall activities, and then I have a FREE DOWNLOAD for you to use with your kiddos!

Fall is a perfect unit for working on counting and color words. Students love collecting and looking at the beautiful leaves that fall from the trees.

Here's a full picture of the cover of the reader:

There are actually two versions you can choose from. One has a blank for students to count and write in the number of leaves on each page. The other doesn't and just includes the number word. Both include numbers 1-10.

You can get this Fall Counting Leaves Emergent Reader HERE.

If your kiddos are needing to simply just work on color words, there is a very similar emergent reader that focuses on that!

Each page simply introduces (or reviews) a new color word. They follow this format (see the next pic), and the last page has many leaves that they can choose to color whatever they would like. It's a great way to casually tie color words into your fall unit. It's also a great way to informally assess which color words your kiddos need to keep working on!

Make sure to have a few extra copies handy for kids who miscolor and need a new copy!
You can get this Fall Coloring Leaves Emergent Reader HERE.

Both of these readers, plus even more readers and other ELA and Math activities centered around Fall, are included in a Fall Activities Bundle.

This bundle includes yet another emergent reader that follows a simple "I can see..." format and introduces or reviews fall vocabulary.

Vocabulary posters are included to hang around your room for decor and most importantly, for use as a reference and also for use with a write-the-room activity.

Large, colorful pocket chart pieces are included as well!

One last thing...

I have a FREE DOWNLOAD for you to use with your kiddos.
Get these Fall 3-Pieces Puzzles to use with your fall unit!

They include a black/white version too. A perfect filler for fast finishers who finish their center work and want something more to work on! Have them color it, cut it out, and give it to a friend to put back together.
