Grandparents Day activities for kids
Grandparents Day is just a few weeks away (September 10th) so I thought I'd share some activities that you can use with your kiddos in celebration of their loved ones.

This day is a really hard one for me to blog about, as it brings to mind memories of many dear grandparents who are no longer with us. At the time that these activities were made, a very special Great-Grandma had just passed. These resources were made in special honor of her.

Alright, let's brush those tears aside and dive into some things that will give your littles a chance to appreciate and celebrate the grandparents in their lives!

You never know what activity or craft their grandparents will hold dear to their hearts. Earlier this year, Great-Grandpa also passed. Amongst some of his belongings was one of the Love Notes (I'll show you them below) that one of my kids had written him from this resource pack! So I encourage you to encourage your students to pass on their completed cards, coloring pages, and notes to their grandparents. It will be a very special to them if it was saved and they receive it back some day.

So the "We Love Grandparents" pack includes 22 pages that you can print and use. It was made with Kindergarten in mind, but can be used for Preschool and even First Grade.

It has both Upper and Lower case Alphabet letter tracing practice. Number tracing too. Multiple mazes with no blocks give all learners a chance to succeed. Students can make it harder if they'd like by drawing in their own blocks! Phonics beginning, middle vowel (CVC), and end sounds practice has adorable grandparent pictures on them.

And here are the Love Notes I mentioned above. There are a bunch to choose from, including a foldable card! A color-by-number and also coloring sheet are included for some color word fun.

Some simple syllable and measurement activities will give students the extra practice they may need. And some simple cut-out puzzles in both black/white and full color are also available. *Note that not all of the pages included in the pack are shown here in the blog.*

Does your school host a Grandparents Day event?
If so, you may want to pull some of these activities for your littles to do with their special person(s)! This next activity is perfect for that...

Grandparents Day BINGO!
(High Frequency Word style!)

If Grandparents are coming (and even if they're not) this is an excellent way for students to show off the sight words they've learned so far. It's also an easy opportunity for their grandparents to take part in helping them if needed!

There are THIRTY Bingo cards to choose from.

And the following 48 words are scrambled amongst the various boards:

The calling cards are LARGE so that all students (and grandparents) can easily see them from the front of the room.

Enjoy preparing for Grandparents Day for your littles! I know that their loved ones will appreciate the time and effort you spend making their special day memorable!

Let me show you  a closer look!
There are actually six different covers that you can choose from for this activity. Both male and female students can choose to make one for their mom, aunt, or grandma. Your fast finishers can make multiple ones!
I had my five year old (who's not yet in Kindergarten) make a sample so that you can see the steps students need to take to complete this project.
Start by having them pick a cover and color it.
Then they can grab a pencil and fill out the beginner writing portions of all the pages included. The first page has the "All About" and "Favorites" tabs. I know you can't see it in this picture, but she thinks her dad loves to do dishes! Woo-hoo, lol!

The next page encourages students to write about something their dad, uncle, or grandfather dislikes. My daughter knows my husband well...she wrote that he dislikes fits! Then she drew a picture of her brother and sister throwing fits - ha!

Next, students will draw a portrait of their special person. For the record, he doesn't own a pair of yellow pants, but maybe she wishes he did?!

Then they will write out what dreams their special person has. I like this Big Dream!

Finally, they write 5 reasons why they love their father, uncle, or grandpa.
Time to cut it all out! Simple cutting and easy assembly allows for all students to happily succeed.
Throw some math in there, and have your students practice measuring by laying out the tabs from shortest to tallest!
Glue the tabs together to make a flip book!
Now your students can take turns reading their flip books to their peers before taking them home to make their special someone feel extra loved!

The next page encourages students to write about something their mother, aunt, or grandma dislikes. My daughter knows me well...she wrote that I dislike fits! Then she drew a picture of her brother and sister throwing fits - ha!
Next, students will draw a portrait of their special person. For the record, I don't own a pair of yellow pants...but maybe she wishes I did?
Then they will write out what dreams their special person has. My big dreams for life are apparently to get out of the house for a change!
Finally, they write 5 reasons why they love their mom, aunt, or grandma.

If you're looking for even more...
This 'I Am Thankful' flip book gives kids a chance to practice writing (and cutting & gluing) skills while thinking about what they are most thankful for in life.

There are nine covers for the book to choose from. If you're going to use this with your students, the books make a wonderful hallway display outside your classroom that they can take home for Thanksgiving break.

Besides the cover, there are six additional pages to the book. Each one has kids focusing on a specific area to be grateful in. From family, to food, to friends, and more!

One page throws a little word making fun into the book and asks students to think of all the smaller words they can make from the letters used in the bigger word 'thankful.'

The 'My Family' page asks kids to draw and label members of their family.
When they are done, they can cut them out and glue them together at the top (don't worry, the tabs show where to glue on each page).
You can get the I Am Thankful Flip Book HERE!

Another great activity are these differentiated 'I Am a Turkey' emergent readers that sneak in some writing practice at the end of each book.

These I Am a Turkey emergent readers not only tell all kinds of facts about the life cycle of a turkey, but are differentiated as well. Meet your students right where they're at with their reading abilities.

Each level of the reader takes students through the basic development of a turkey from inside of an egg, to hatching, to young poult life, to adult life.

Here are a few more pages that are included:

My favorite part of this informational emergent reader set is that the last page that sneaks in some writing practice! It asks students to write down some of the favorite facts they learned about turkeys.

As I was browsing on Pinterest to look for new Thanksgiving craft ideas, I stumbled up this awesome FREEBIE by The Creative Classroom (see link below)...
Each page of this little mini book has a place for them to write and draw what they are thankful for. Plus, it's just absolutely adorable! I'm so glad I ran across this!
The download includes detailed instructions on how to build this book, along with picture examples.
Get this FREEBIE from The Creative Classroom to use with your kids too!

I just started a NEW Pinterest Thanksgiving board to keep the newest Thanksgiving craft & activities ideas all in one place. If you have some good Thanksgiving ideas and would like to be a contributing pinned on the board, just shoot me a message and I'll add you.
It includes all kinds of ideas for Thanksgiving related songs, games, crafts, snacks, and learning activities. I'm glad to finally have it all in one place so that I don't have to keep scrolling through my other boards looking for the Thanksgiving themed items.

For clean up or transition times, use this silly Turkey Song as a time limit for students to complete cleaning.

Another one that you'll find yourself singing long after it's finished is this fun one:

If you're kids like to watch videos of books being read, this next video reads Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving. Sometimes my kids like to watch it read on video after I've read it to them in person.

Speaking of books, there are so many to available for Thanksgiving, but here are some of my favorite. Maybe you'll find one or two new ones that you haven't used before.

On a non-classroom related topic...
Do you have a favorite food you make every year for Thanksgiving?
This year, I'm making something new (to me) that I found from Spend With Pennies on Facebook - Cranberry Millionaire Salad
It looks delicious and I can't wait to try it! I'm not much of a cook myself, so I try to keep to simple...and this definitely looks that!

If you have something you love to make, I'd love to make for Thanksgiving, I'd love to hear about it in the comments below.

From my family to yours, have the most wonderful Thanksgiving ever!
